Project Overview
RePlantHub is a solar-powered community device promoting sustainability, dedicated to reducing food expenditures and easing cost of living pressures for the 18 to 30-year-old demographic who are either working or studying. It recycles household food waste and recyclable items, transforming them into fertilizers and renewable energy, and in turn provides local residents with nutritious and affordable vegetables and agricultural products.
- User Interaction and Resource Conversion: Users can deposit food waste and recyclables through a conveniently designed kitchen disposal window, and gain points proportional to the amount of waste provided. This waste then undergoes treatment in a purification composting pipe, transforming it into nutrient-rich fertilizers and renewable energy.
-
Automated Planting and Harvesting: These fertilizers are transported to RePlantHub's soil through transfer pipes, nourishing plant growth. The device is equipped with an automated solar system and a rainwater collection reservoir, enabling automated planting and harvesting of plants.
-
Agricultural Product Exchange and Environmental Impact: Users can exchange fresh agricultural products using points or other payment methods. By utilizing recycled food waste, RePlantHub not only reduces the need for landfill and incineration of food waste, alleviating greenhouse gas and air pollution, but also helps users obtain agricultural products at a lower cost, effectively relieving the pressure of food and living costs.
Iteration #1
Interactive Prototype
The interactive flow that you are about to experience is a prototype of Replant Hub, a community device that aims to reduce food costs and pressures.
RePlant Hub collects food waste from households and offer points in return. The waste are then converted into nutrient-rich fertilizers for growing vegetables, the seed undergoes automatic planting and harvesting in RePlant Hub, which the fresh produce can be later redeemed by users using points or alternative payment methods. During the interactive flow, you will be helping Alice perform 3 tasks, including disposing food waste and earning points, collecting harvested plants, and buying extra ingredients.
Iteration #2
Reflection
Through this project, I learned how to utilize design thinking to study user experience design. A user-centered approach helps us understand user needs, identify problems, and propose innovative solutions.
In this project, the most important aspect was learning various design thinking methods to help us better justify and refine our design requirements and goals, such as the Double Diamond model and Think Aloud Protocol.
